Business

Introduction

Business is all around us in everyday life. Whatever path you take in life, be it sport, media, music, retail, banking and many more, you will be working for a business. Learning about business will give you an understanding of how businesses operate which you will be able to put into practice once in employment.

The aims of the business department are for all pupils to gain a well-rounded knowledge of business and what it takes to be successful. The department aims for pupils to learn different skills and qualities expected in business which will also help them to gain employment after their education. Over the past four years, the department has had a 100% pass rate in all courses which we continue to strive for each and every year.

We work hard in the business department to ensure that pupils gain as much real life experience as possible. We often use guest speakers from business to bring pupils' learning in the classroom to life. We also arrange many trips on business related courses which we believe are crucial to pupils in applying their learning to real life situations.

Extra Curricular Opportunities

Young Enterprise

Pupils have the opportunity to set up and run their own micro business. Last year pupils set up their business selling 'SnugaMug' which involved everything included in running a business from production through to marketing, selling and finance.

Student Investor

This national competition involves teams investing £100,000 of virtual money in the stock market. Pupils will need to keep portfolios healthy by reading and forecasting market information to identify which shares to buy and sell in order to make a profit.

MoreLaw

Working in partnership with Browne Jacobson legal practice, the Nottingham Academy has for the past three years successfully ran the MoreLaw mentoring scheme. Students on law courses have the opportunity to gain one of six places on the scheme which will enable them to be mentored by a solicitor at the firm, gain a work experience placement as well as visits to the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

The business department offers many opportunities for students to take part in trips as well as experience guest speakers coming into the school.
