Psychology

What do we do? Why do we do it?

Psychology enables our students to consider a range of factors that influence human behaviour, enhancing students’ awareness of themselves, others and society.

Students will develop an ability to understand, apply, analyse and evaluate psychological terms, concepts, studies and theories. They will acquire the skills to critically consider the credibility of these explanations and investigations. Emphasis, throughout the course, is on the development of research skills with students becoming competent in the methodologies used in psychology. Students will be able to apply their knowledge to real-life scenarios. For example, in the psychological problems topic, students explore mental health and psychological disorders. As a result, they will become more confident in tackling associated stigma and discrimination. Through development and memory, performance in other academic subjects will be improved by considering the validity of learning styles, the importance of having a growth mindset and understanding how information is less easily forgotten. Furthermore, in sleep and dreaming, they will consider the health benefits of sleep and techniques to improve their own sleep.

The curriculum has also been designed to improve students practical, mathematical, analytical and problem-solving skills. It will also cultivate an enthusiasm for psychology, leading to the pursuit of further study and associated careers.
