July saw Nottingham Academy’s first ever Culture Day. Students and staff were invited to come into school in traditional dress, colours of their flag or something that represented them. It was an incredible day starting with assemblies at the Bridge. This was a time to show case a cheerleading performance from Nottingham Dance Academy, followed by students parading in their beautiful outfits and waving their flags. Throughout the day, staff took the opportunity to educate students about their own traditions and find out about the many cultures and traditions of the students. At lunchtime at GC1, students had an event out on the field, with music, food, face painting, henna and another parade. The day was finished off with a Year 7 and 8 disco at the Bridge.
Many staff and students expressed it was the best day of the year!
Throughout Pride Week, students had excellent discussions during tutor time about gender, sexuality, tolerance and Pride. Year 9 had an assembly from Out in Education a Nottingham University based student group about gender and sexuality, followed by a working group for some students. Throughout the week, there were flashes of colour, with bake sales, ice pole sales, badges, flags culminating in students swapping items of their uniform for rainbow colours!
We are looking forward to welcoming students to join Sixth Form in September, read more for dates applications and instructions
