Nottingham Academy

Nottingham Academy has been recognised by Ofsted for its welcoming and inclusive learning environment which supports pupils’ aspirations.

Inspectors who visited the Academy found that “pupils’ personal development is strong throughout the school” and that pupils appreciate and “benefit from many enriching experiences” including trips to the coastline and theatre, as well as a range of sporting activities and charity work.

Emphasising the “inclusive ethos” of the Academy, the report highlighted the positive example set by the leadership team and teachers, stating leaders plan to include all pupils and that “pupils feed off their teachers’ enthusiasm”. This inclusive culture has had ripple effects across the Academy with levels of attendance improving overall and pupils in alternative provision properly supported to help prepare them for the future.

Notably, the report highlighted the success of the Primary phase, where pupils achieve well in most subjects, staff help foster a love of reading in pupils and the teaching of mathematics helps pupils to develop both fluency and reasoning.

Regretfully, Ofsted has rated the Academy as Requires Improvement overall. However, the report identified Nottingham Academy as an “improving school” with pupils already recognising the positive changes that are taking place. To further drive these improvements, the Academy, sponsored by Greenwood Academies Trust, is working hard with the support of the Trust to implement new action plans that will continue this positive trajectory.

Inspectors also recognised the Academy’s strong early years and sixth form provision. The report noted, “children thrive in Reception” with the “vibrant environment” created by staff adding to “children’s enjoyment of learning”, while sixth form pupils study courses that suit their interests and enjoy opportunities to further develop their character including, mentoring, charity and enterprise activities.
