At the Nottingham Academy, we strongly believe in celebrating the diversity of cultures and promoting community cohesion. As well as our Modern Foreign Languages department and the dedicated English Language Development School for pupils with English as an additional language, we offer pupils a chance to study for qualifications in any additional languages they may speak. Many pupils study on our Urdu courses from KS3 up to KS5 and we also have pupils who have studied Arabic, Polish, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Italian and Portuguese.
The aim of our Urdu curriculum is to enthuse and motivate pupils in the study of Urdu language. Our vision is for pupils to love and study the language and culture in a friendly environment whilst striving for formal recognition of their hard work with excellent examination results.
Study of community languages not only help pupils develop their understanding of the language and its grammar but inform them about the contemporary society and culture of the countries studied. This can, in turn, assist their understanding of English grammar and culture.
A career in any sector will be enhanced by study of a foreign language. Specific areas that study of community languages may lead to include social care, interpreting and translating and teaching.
